One of the hockey world’s most valuable assets is no more.
CapGeek.com, the premier NHL salary cap website and arguably the best of its kind in any sport, has ceased operations. The website made the announcement Saturday night, shocking hockey fans, media and likely front-office people alike.
The shutdown comes as CapGeek founder Matthew Wuest deals with health issues, the website said in the announcement.
“Effective immediately, Jan. 3, 2015, CapGeek.com has permanently ceased operations,” the statement read. “This sudden decision is made with a heavy heart and is due to the personal health of CapGeek.com founder and director Matthew Wuest. While this decision may raise many questions, it is requested that you respect Matthew’s privacy and wish for no media or purchase inquiries. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding at this difficult time.”
The news surprised the hockey community Saturday night, as well wishes flooded in across social media platforms. Perhaps one of the most telling tweets came from Richard Labbe of La Presse in Canada.
