The Boston Red Sox finally made it official.

The team signed left-handed reliever Craig Breslow to a one-year deal, the club announced Monday. Breslow’s agent, Bob Baratta, told ESPN Boston back on Dec. 19 the two sides had agreed to a deal worth $2 million.

The Red Sox initially declined to pick up their one-year, $4 million option on Breslow back in October, as he came off his worst season of his major league career. The southpaw went 2-4 with a 5.96 ERA in 60 relief appearances after having a strong 2013 season going 5-2 with a 1.81 ERA in 61 games.

In order to make room for Breslow, the Red Sox designated catcher Dan Butler for assignment. The 28-year-old made his major league debut with Boston last season, going 4-for-19 with three doubles and two RBIs in seven games with the club. The former undrafted free agent out of Arizona hit .248 with a .329 on-base percentage and .416 slugging percentage over parts of four seasons with the Pawtucket Red Sox.

The Red Sox have 10 days to trade Butler or pass him through waivers.
