A-Rod is trying to schmooze the commish.
Alex Rodriguez met with new Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred last week in an effort to find closure following the Biogenesis scandal that led to the New York Yankees third baseman’s season-long suspension, sources told ESPN.com.
Rodriguez reportedly initiated the meeting, which lasted about 10 minutes and involved no lawyers. It was said to be a positive discussion, as Rodriguez reportedly apologized and promised to behave in the future.
A-Rod’s meeting with Manfred wasn’t a requirement. His suspension is complete and he’s expected to return to the field this season. Rodriguez had a rocky relationship with outgoing commissioner Bud Selig, though, so perhaps this simply is the slugger’s attempt to wipe the slate clean with a new man in charge.
According to ESPN.com, Rodriguez met with Manfred after his suspension was slightly reduced, and it’s believed the commissioner instructed the 14-time All-Star to remain quiet during his time away from the game. A source told ESPN.com that the two met one other time with lawyers present.
Rodriguez remains under contract with the Yankees, but his 2015 role is undefined. The 39-year-old is owed $61 million over the next three seasons.
