The NHL’s marquee outdoor event is coming back to Massachusetts.

The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens will write a new chapter in their historic rivalry when they clash in the 2016 Winter Classic next January, DJ Bean of WEEI.com first reported Monday, citing league sources. Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston later confirmed the news.

Neither the Bruins nor the NHL have confirmed or made any official announcement regarding next season’s Winter Classic.

Per Bean’s report, the venue of the 2016 Winter Classic will be Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots. It will be the third Winter Classic staged in an NFL stadium.

The Bruins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in overtime in the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park. If the Bruins indeed host the 2016 event, they would become the first team to host multiple Winter Classic games. The Chicago Blackhawks have hosted a Winter Classic (2009) and a Stadium Series game (2014).
