You can call him Detective Rex Ryan.
The New England Patriots have been the victims of two false fire alarms at their team hotel during Super Bowl week, with the first waking them up in the middle of the night Tuesday and the latest incident occurring just before 5 a.m. local time Thursday. While the culprit(s) behind the little stunts is unknown, the new head coach of the Buffalo Bills has an interesting theory.
“Let’s face it: Belichick probably did it himself,” Ryan from the ESPN set in Phoenix, per New York Daily News. “He’s the one that pulled the thing and created a different story. Those things happen. You try to prepare your team in the offseason — training camps and all that kind of stuff. Would you pull a fire alarm or something? You may.”
Belichick certainly has plenty of tricks up his sleeves, but Ryan downplayed the significance of the disturbances this many days out from Super Sunday — while getting a nice dig in, as well.
“Ironically that’s happened to us a couple times in New England,” Ryan said. “I don’t think it’s that big a deal unless it’s the night before.”
It’s also not a big deal if you never hear the alarms in the first place. Tight end Rob Gronkowski told reporters at media day he slept through the first alarm, and Brady said his sleep wasn’t interrupted, either, with the second disruption.
“If there has, I haven’t heard it,” Brady said Thursday morning, “I must be sleeping through it.”
As for Ryan, he said he can be removed from the list of suspects.
“I was not there,” Ryan said. “You can’t blame that one on me.”
