FOXBORO, Mass. — Like most New England Patriots players in attendance Friday, Rob Gronkowski really did not want to talk about DeflateGate. But the tight end’s responses at least proved to be entertaining.
“It was a little wet last (game),” Gronkowski said with a smirk when asked if he noticed anything off about the footballs used during the first half of New England’s AFC Championship Game win last Sunday. “That’s why I had a couple drops.”
Gronkowski said he really cannot tell the difference between a football that’s properly inflated and one with a slightly lower PSI. If we’re talking basketballs, however, it’s a different story.
“I have no clue,” he said. “I’ve never really — I mean, I can tell with a basketball; a good one bounces high. But that’s the only time I can really tell is if I’m bouncing a ball. A basketball, if it’s really, really (inflated), it bounces up over your head. If it’s under-inflated, it doesn’t bounce that high. That’s all I can tell.”
But Rob, a reporter pointed out, your trademark celebration involves violently bouncing the football onto the turf. By that logic, shouldn’t you be able to notice the difference?
“Man, this is getting out of control,” Gronkowski laughed before moving on to the next topic. “You guys come up with the most outrageous questions.”
Say what you want about Gronk, but the man knows how to keep things interesting.
