It takes a pretty special cause to bring NHL rivals together.

Through Gatorade Canada, Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby, Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux and a host of other big names around the league joined to give a group of sled hockey players the surprise of their lives.

The Cruisers, a Canadian sled hockey team, were under the impression they had volunteered to be in a documentary about their sport before they saw some of the best NHLers take the ice. Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon, Columbus Blue Jackets forward Scott Hartnell, Vancouver Canucks goalie Ryan Miller and San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture also were among the guys that took part in the special day.

After surprising the team from behind a curtain, the players took the ice in full gear, strapped themselves into sleds and divided into teams for an unforgettable scrimmage.

“Seeing the poise, the character and the mental strength, they really are an inspiration to all of us, so I think their passion for hockey is something that we all share — no matter our situation or where we come from,” Crosby said.
