While nothing’s ever etched in stone with regards to roster construction, the Boston Red Sox have a pretty good idea of who will be in Fort Myers later this month when the club kicks off spring training.
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington, who previously suggested that Boston has done most of its heavy lifting this offseason, reiterated Thursday that he doesn’t expect any major moves before camp.
“I would expect the group we have for spring training is in place, and I would be surprised if there were any additions,” Cherington said during a conference call. “I couldn’t completely rule out a non-roster deal with someone, but we feel good about where we are with our position players and pitching group, so this is probably the group you’ll see when we take the field in Fort Myers.”
Cherington’s comments again throw cold water on the belief that Boston still might pursue an “ace” despite already adding starting pitchers Rick Porcello, Wade Miley and Justin Masterson this winter. The Red Sox’s Opening Day rotation could consist of the aforementioned trio plus Clay Buchholz and Joe Kelly.
Perhaps Cherington simply is playing the GM game and Boston actually will pursue the likes of James Shields, Cole Hamels or Jordan Zimmerman in the coming weeks. But it sure doesn’t sound like anything major is coming down the pike.
