Are the Seattle Seahawks taking too much heat for their crushing loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX?
Bill Belichick certainly thinks so. The Patriots head coach suggested Wednesday on WEEI’s “Dale and Holley” that everyone should back off Pete Carroll and Co. for the last-minute interception that sealed New England’s fourth Super Bowl title.
“I think there has been a lot of criticism that’s I don’t think anywhere close to being deserved or founded,” Belichick said. “That football team is very good and they’re very well-coached. Pete does a great job. Malcolm (Butler) and Brandon (Browner) on that particular play just made a great play.
“I think the criticism they’ve gotten for the game is totally out of line, and (it’s) by a lot of people who I don’t think are anywhere near qualified to be commenting on it.”
The Seahawks have faced heavy scrutiny in the wake of quarterback Russell Wilson throwing an interception to Butler near the goal line with 20 seconds remaining in Sunday’s big game. Carroll, the head coach, has received much of the blame for his decision to call a pass play rather than hand the ball to Pro Bowl running back Marshawn Lynch, but perhaps it’s time to emphasize the Patriots’ ability to make a play with a title on the line.
