B.J. Upton hasn’t fared too well for the Atlanta Braves, but maybe Melvin Upton Jr. will be able to hit above the Mendoza line.
The struggling Braves outfielder will go by his birth name in 2015 — which his representatives confirmed to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman — and will wear Upton Jr. on his jersey. The nickname B.J. is short for Bossman Jr., a nod to his father Manny, who was called Bossman.
Bowman says Upton will explain the name change once he reports to Braves camp this week. It’s already in effect, though, as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the nameplate on his locker now reads Upton Jr.
Upton more than likely is changing his name simply to have somewhat of a fresh start. The center fielder has had a terrible first two years in Atlanta after signing a massive five-year, $75.25 million contract before the 2013 season. In those two seasons combined, Upton is batting .198 with just 21 home runs and 61 RBIs.
