There will come a point where the New England Patriots must turn the page on their Super Bowl win and focus on the future. Devin McCourty’s free agency will be a hot topic at that time.
McCourty has been a valuable member of the Patriots’ secondary since being drafted in the first round in 2010. The All-Pro defensive back is set to hit the open market this offseason, which begs the question: Has McCourty played his final game in a Pats uniform?
“I hope not. We’ll see, but I hope not,” McCourty told CSNNE.com’s Tom E. Curran in the wake of New England’s Super Bowl XLIX victory over the Seattle Seahawks. “This ride has been incredible — being in the Super Bowl twice and winning it once — there’s not much a player can ask for except for being at home. And this is home.”
McCourty was drafted as a cornerback but has since been converted into a safety. He has served as a team captain each of the last three seasons and losing him in free agency undoubtedly would be a blow to the Patriots’ defense. The 27-year-old, coming off his fifth season with New England, in many ways functions as the quarterback of the Patriots’ secondary.
The Patriots face some other interesting offseason questions, one of which involves cornerback Darrelle Revis’ future in New England. McCourty’s contract situation could be near the top of the organization’s to-do list, though, so his desire to stay put certainly bodes well for the Pats.
