TORONTO — An NHL jersey worn by Hall of Fame defenseman Eddie Shore has sold for $119,500.
Shore’s Boston Bruins No. 2 jersey was sold to an unidentified collector from New York on Saturday night.
Previous owner Scott Johnston had planned to frame the jersey and hang it up before he found out how much it was worth. He had hoped to fetch about $100,000 for the jersey once worn by Shore, a four-time NHL MVP. Shore was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947, the same year the Bruins retired his number.
The jersey belonged to Johnston’s grandfather, Byron Johnston, who played in the defunct Can-Am Hockey League in the 1930s. In those days, the NHL club passed its used jerseys to the minor league team. Byron Johnston received the shirt Shore had worn until 1931.
