It took more than 80 minutes of action to settle Tuesday night’s Beanpot semifinal between Harvard and Boston University. But the game could have ended much earlier if an excruciatingly close scoring chance for Harvard was allowed.
With the score tied at 3 midway through the third period, Harvard forward Sean Malone crashed into BU goaltender Matt O’Connor, creating a massive pile-up in the crease. The Crimson took several whacks on goal, and the puck came to rest on top of one of the players who had fallen in the crease.
One angle of the video review showed the puck might have just barely crossed the line, but the referee on the ice did not find enough evidence to overturn the call and ruled “no goal.”
The call was crucial, as neither team scored in regulation or the first overtime period. It really stung for Harvard, which lost 4-3 in the second overtime at TD Garden.
