Jermaine Jones will be out of commission a little longer than first thought.

Jones had successful sports hernia surgery Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., the New England Revolution said in a statement. The veteran midfielder is expected to miss four to six weeks of action while he completes his rehabilitation program from the injury. Jones is likely to miss the Revolution’s 2015 MLS regular season opener, which is on March 8 in Seattle.

Following the procedure, Jones, 33, uploaded a photo to Instagram from his hospital bed.

Jones recently participated in the United States men’s national team’s January training camp and played 90 minutes in both of its two recent exhibition games against Chile and Panama. It’s unclear exactly when Jones first suffered the injury, but he had been playing hurt for some time.

Jones helped the Revolution reach the 2014 MLS Cup final where it lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy in extra time. The Revs are counting on Jones to lead them a step further in 2015.
