John Axford pitched a perfect game at the Oscars last year, but the hits came early and often this time around.

The Colorado Rockies relief pitcher and film buff drew headlines in 2014 when he amazingly went a perfect 18-for-18 in his predictions for Oscar winners.

Naturally, Axford decided to try his hand again in 2015 but upped the ante this time, offering his picks for 24 categories. MLB even gave him the reigns of its official Twitter account with the hashtag #OscarsWithAxford to mark the occasion.

The 31-year-old got off to a fast start, setting down the first six picks in order, but his dream fell flat with the seventh category. [tweet align=’center’] [tweet align=’center’]

After that, things got out of hand faster than a blown save.

Not only did Axford get six more picks wrong — including Best Picture, which “Birdman” won instead of his pick, “Boyhood” — he also lost a pretty embarrassing Twitter bet with actress Nadia Dajani for incorrectly picking Michael Keaton for best lead actor (Eddie Redmayne won). That’s rough.

Axford finished the night 17-for-24, which is still pretty impressive. The man did earn a bachelor’s degree in Film and Television from Notre Dame and has been a sponsor at the Milwaukee Film Festival since 2011, so he clearly knows his stuff.

That said, we’re still looking forward to seeing him follow up on that bet.
