Ray Rice reportedly has an offer in hand, though it doesn’t entail an NFL return.
Rice received a $1 million contract offer from a fantasy football website hoping to sign the former Baltimore Ravens running back as a spokesperson, according to TMZ Sports. The offer from ProDraftLeague.com reportedly is for a one-year job that pays a $500,000 base salary and includes another $500,000 in bonuses based on membership milestones.
There’s a very interesting clause in the contract offer, too, according to TMZ Sports. As you probably know, Rice sat out the 2014 season following a domestic assault incident involving his now-wife, Janay. So, if Rice hits his wife at any point during the contract period, the website will receive its money back.
“It’s been one year since Mr. Rice physically assaulted his wife and we are very confident that he will not do it again,” ProDraftLeague.com CEO Mark Tadros told TMZ Sports. “But in the event that he does while being employed by Pro Draft League, his contract will be immediately terminated and the entire $500,000 must be returned plus an additional $500,000 in damages that our brand will incur for being associated with Mr. Rice.”
Rice will have a full plate if he chooses to become a Pro Draft League fantasy insider. His obligations reportedly would include the following:
— Two TV commercials
— Two viral videos
— One photo shoot
— 30 media interviews
— Weekly column with personal analysis on which NFL players to play
— Field reporter work, interviewing various NFL players for the site
Perhaps Rice will hold out for an NFL gig, seeing as how he just turned 28 years old and is a three-time Pro Bowl pick. But signing Rice obviously requires a public relations leap of faith given the inevitable media circus. Teams might shy away.
“Mr. Rice has shown deep remorse for his act of domestic violence and I feel he deserves a second chance,” Tadros told TMZ Sports in defense of ProDraftLeague.com’s contract offer.
Rice released a statement Friday apologizing for the “horrible mistake” he made roughly one year ago in Atlantic City.
