FORT MYERS, Fla. — Pitchers and catchers weren’t the only ones active Saturday.

Although the day marked the first official workout for Boston Red Sox pitchers and catchers, a majority of the team’s position players also participated in various workouts. Pablo Sandoval, Rusney Castillo and Mookie Betts were among those who took some cuts in batting practice on one of the back fields at JetBlue Park.

Sandoval, Castillo and Betts all enter 2015 under unique circumstances. Sandoval, a three-time World Series champion, signed a five-year, $95 million contract over the offseason, while Castillo, a relatively unknown commodity out of Cuba, signed a seven-year, $72.5 million deal last August. Betts is looking to assert himself after an impressive first season in the majors.

While Sandoval is firmly entrenched at third base, both Castillo and Betts are competing for starting jobs in Boston’s outfield. Castillo and Betts will be exposed to both center field and right field this spring, according to Farrell.
