INDIANAPOLIS — Quarterback Jameis Winston currently is projected to be the first quarterback selected in the 2015 NFL draft, but at least one team has serious concerns about his shoulder.
Winston’s shoulder is “bad,” a scout who is not authorized to speak on the record, told NESN.com. The Florida State product’s shoulder won’t be an issue in the short-term, but it’s viewed as a long-term problem by this team. The injury was categorized as a “real issue.”
Teams noticed a “weakness” in Winston’s throwing shoulder, ESPN reported Friday. The quarterback denied any issues during his news conference at the NFL Scouting Combine.
“I had an MRI just like everyone else,” Winston said. “I’ve been playing football since I was four years old, and my shoulder has been fine.
“I’ve got the same shoulder I done had the last two years at Florida State.”
Winston was a pitcher on the Florida State baseball team, which he said could explain any questions about his shoulder.
Winston is the top ranked quarterback in NFL Media’s Mike Mayock’s rankings. The quarterback class is considered weak aside from Winston and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.
Winston said he will throw Saturday at the combine.
