The Seattle Seahawks are waiting on Marshawn Lynch.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider indicated Tuesday in a radio interview with ESPN 710 Seattle that he’s unsure whether Lynch will return next season or retire. The Pro Bowl running back is entering the final year of a four-year, $31 million contract.

“Whether or not he wants to play next year, I can’t answer that,” Schneider said. “I don’t know if he knows at this juncture.”

The Seahawks apparently plan to negotiate with Lynch if he returns for a ninth NFL season and sixth with Seattle. Lynch is slated to earn a base salary of $5 million, but Seattle could consider reworking the 28-year-old’s contract so it gives him more money yet lessens the team’s cap hit for 2015.

“Obviously we think he’s a hell of a player,” Schneider said. “We want to have him back, he knows that, his representatives know that. He knows that if he’s back he’s not going to be playing at the same number he’s scheduled to make.”

The Seahawks again face a shorter offseason by virtue of their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance. That leaves less time to figure out Beast Mode’s situation.

“We’ve played a lot of football these last two years,” Schneider said. “It may not happen overnight.”
