Apparently Kam Chancellor did more than just “tweak” his knee two days before Super Bowl XLIX.
The Seattle Seahawks safety revealed recently that he tore his left MCL and suffered a deep bone bruise near the end of the team’s last practice Friday and played the entire Super Bowl with the injury. There even was doubt that he would be available for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots, but the medical staff cleared him to play.
“Shoot, my injury happened two days before the game and they told me I wasn’t going to be able to play,” Chancellor said, via Seahawks.com “They told me, ‘Torn MCL and bone bruise.’ I was mad. I was frustrated. But at the end of the day, I was able to play.”
Chancellor’s revelation means that the three most prominent members of the “Legion of Boom” played through major injuries against the Patriots. Cornerback Richard Sherman had torn ligaments in his left elbow that likely will require offseason Tommy John surgery, while Earl Thomas battled a labrum injury after separating his shoulder in the NFC Championship Game.
All three showed amazing resolve, but it’s clear their injuries had an impact in New England’s 28-24 win, during which Patriots quarterback Tom Brady lit up the Seahawks’ secondary with 328 passing yards and four touchdowns. The Seahawks’ defense allowed just one 300-yard passer (Peyton Manning) during the regular season and didn’t allowed a passing touchdown in six of its last seven regular season games.
