Super Bowl 50 Odds: Patriots, Seahawks Favorites To Contend Again

Super Bowl XLIX officially is a wrap, and the New England Patriots are the champions.

The Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks 28-24, allowing them to cover on virtually all spreads. Sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com opened with the Seahawks as two-point favorites and closed with them as much as 1.5-point underdogs. The total hung around 47.5 points, which means the OVER hit with Tom Brady’s final touchdown pass.

Brady was named MVP of the game following a four-touchdown, 328-yard performance. He was the betting favorite at 8/5, just ahead of Russell Wilson (7/2) and Marshawn Lynch (4/1).

Two of the most popular prop bets each year are in the pregame, and include the total time for the national anthem and the coin toss result. Idina Menzel finished at a time of 2 minutes, 4 seconds, which came in just OVER the 2:01 total installed by the sportsbooks. The coin toss came up tails. For some reason, heads was getting a lot more money this year, with the sportsbooks reporting 58 percent of the money going to the losing side.

A lot of money came in on whether Lynch would grab his crotch after a touchdown. The Seattle running back scored a touchdown in the second quarter, but he did not grab his crotch. NO was installed at -600.

Two other popular prop bets at the sportsbooks were Lynch rushing yards and Rob Gronkowski receiving yards. Lynch finished the game with 102 rushing yards, which put him OVER the 92.5-yard total. Gronkowski finished the game with 68 receiving yards, which put him UNDER the 74.5-yard total.

Two other entertaining prop bets were related to Bill Belichick’s wardrobe choices. The Patriots coach elected to wear a blue hoodie with his sleeves intact. Grey was the favorite hoodie color at 1/2, but blue paid off at 7/4. Red was a 7/1 long shot. Cut sleeves was the favorite at 2/3, while intact paid off at 11/10.

On the early Super Bowl 50 odds, Seattle is the favorite at 5/1 at the sportsbooks. New England is right behind at 7/1 to repeat, with the Green Bay Packers at 8/1. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders are the longest shots on that NFL futures board for next season at 200/1.
