Brendan Rodgers might be happier than anyone else about Liverpool’s performance against Manchester City.

Liverpool defeated Manchester City 2-1 in a Premier League game Sunday at Anfield. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praised his players effusively during his postgame press conference.

“It was a brilliant result and an equally brilliant performance,” Rodgers said, according to LiverpoolFC.com. “I thought we thoroughly deserved the victory. I thought the players were relentless today in their work and their intensity, and we had some great quality in our football. It was very, very pleasing.”

Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho both scored exceptional goals to edge the Reds past Manchester City.

Both the result and the Reds’ performance were stunning, especially considering Liverpool played 120 minutes in Istanbul on Thursday night and only had two-plus days to recover ahead of Sunday’s pivotal game against Manchester City. Rodgers credited his players’ professionalism for helping overcome the logistical disadvantage.

“I’m sure you (traveling reporters) felt firsthand what it was like, getting back at half past four in the morning and probably not getting home until about six o’clock,” Rodgers said. “How they performed was at a real top level. I’ve got nothing but admiration for them because their focus was good in the game. They worked the system very well. And as the game wore on, we created more chances. We restricted Manchester City to one shot on target.

“To keep a team of that quality to one shot on target, in a game that they would really want to win as much as us, says everything about the spirit, character and quality of my team.”

Liverpool moves into fifth place in the Premier League standings with 48 points after 27 games. Rodgers’ relentless Reds have a top-four finish in their sights, and Sunday’s victory puts them in a good position to pursue success in the final months of the 2014-15 season.
