BALTIMORE — The Ravens have traded nine-year defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to the Detroit Lions.
The move, designed to create salary-cap space, was announced by the Ravens on Tuesday, although details of the deal were not immediately available.
Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome was attempting to renegotiate Ngata’s contract, but the sides apparently did not reach an accord. Ngata is due $8.5 million next season and has a $16 million salary-cap figure.
Ngata, 31, is a five-time Pro Bowl pick. He started 12 games last season before serving a four-game suspension for using Adderall.
In Detroit, Ngata will fill the void left by the departure of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who is expected to sign with the Miami Dolphins. The Ravens also are expected to lose standout wide receiver Torrey Smith, linebacker Pernell McPhee and tight end Owen Daniels to free agency.
