Liverpool Loans Jerome Sinclair To Wigan For Final Months Of 2014-15 Season

Liverpool is sending Jerome Sinclair into the heat of battle to help him and the club in the future.

Liverpool loaned Jerome Sinclair to Wigan Athletic on Monday, according to Sinclair, 19, will spend the rest of the 2014-15 season with the Latics to gain experience and help them in their fight against relegation from the Championship (England’s second division).

Sinclair is Liverpool’s youngest player ever, having made his debut in September 2012 at age 16 and six days. Sinclair hasn’t played for Liverpool’s first team since then, but he has been a standout performer in the Reds’ academy. The speedy striker has scored 22 goals at various youth levels this season.

Wigan currently is in 22nd place in the Championship standings with 11 games remaining. Wigan must finish 21st or higher to remain in the division next season. Wigan trails 21st-placed Rotherham by six points.

Sinclair hopes to stay healthy, score his first goals and help Wigan avoid relegation.

“Pace, energy and hopefully goals,” Sinclair told Wigan’s website Monday when asked what he’ll bring to the Latics, according to “I’m a striker so I want to try and bring goals to the team if I can.

“The last two years I have struggled to stay fit, but this year I’ve been able to stay fit and have been playing regularly.

“I’ve now got this big opportunity to try and play some first team games, and I’m hoping to grab it, and hopefully it will be a great experience for me.”

“We just have to keep working hard and try and nail down some good results and hopefully stay up.”

Sinclair could make his Wigan debut Tuesday against Watford.

Another young Liverpool player, Sheyi Ojo, also currently is on loan at Wigan. Sinclair will join Ojo under the watchful eye of Wigan manager Malky Mackay.

Liverpool hopes Sinclair will return to the club this summer as a more seasoned, first-team performer. Sinclair could be ready to compete for playing time at Liverpool next season.
