Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos is a threat to score whenever he has the puck, which is a good reason to make sure he never gets it.

Max Pacioretty clearly didn’t receive that memo.

The Montreal Canadiens winger made an extremely costly mistake during the two teams’ matchup Monday, passing the puck backwards and directly to Stamkos. And because it’s Stamkos, he obviously scored.

Whoops.

The goal was Stamkos’ 38th on the season, good for third in the NHL.

Also, as CBS Sports pointed out, the play wasn’t offside because it was a Montreal player who put it back in the Habs’ zone.
