The New England Patriots continue to fill out the back end of their roster in the early stages of free agency.

The Patriots signed former Miami Dolphins linebacker Jonathan Freeny, according to the NFL’s transaction wire. Freeny went undrafted out of Rutgers in 2011 and has mostly played special teams with the Dolphins. He wasn’t tendered as a restricted free agent by the Dolphins.

The 6-foot-2, 254-pound former Scarlet Knight played defensive end in college, recording 11 sacks in four years. He ran a 4.72-second 40-yard dash and a 7.07-second 3-cone drill at his pro day in 2011, and also had a 37.5-inch vertical leap and 10-foot, 3-inch broad jump.

The Patriots have signed pass rusher Jabaal Sheard; wide receivers Kevin Dorsey, Brandon Gibson and Brian Tyms; and defensive back Chimdi Chekwa so far in free agency.

Freeny is the fifth Rutgers product on the Patriots’ roster, joining defensive backs Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon and Logan Ryan and tight end Tim Wright.
