Patriots’ Three Play Rule Proposals Include Extra Cameras, Longer PATs

The New England Patriots are trying to tweak three NFL rules for next season.

The Patriots proposed to the league to make every play reviewable, to attempt extra points from the 15-yard line instead of the 2 and to place fixed cameras on all boundary lines.

As part of making every play reviewable, the Patriots proposed that NFL head coaches call a timeout rather than throw a red flag onto the field.

The extra-point proposal would not affect two-point conversions, which still would be attempted from the 2. The Patriots proposed that a choice between an extra-point attempt and a two-point conversion isn’t final and is subject to change following a timeout or an accepted penalty. The new extra points would be 33-yard attempts.

Placing fixed cameras on all boundary lines, including sidelines, end lines and goal lines, “guarantees coverage along these lines regardless of where network cameras are positioned” for reviews and challenges.

Teams will vote on the play rule proposals at the NFL Annual Meeting next week in Phoenix.
