Maybe the New York Mets are contagious.

On the same day it was revealed Mets starter Zack Wheeler suffered a torn muscle in his elbow, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Joe Kelly was forced to leave his start versus the Mets early with an apparent injury.

It’s unknown at this point the nature or severity of the injury, but according to reports, Red Sox manager John Farrell visited the mound after Kelly delivered a 97 mph fastball in the third inning. Farrell quickly called on a trainer, and Kelly was replaced by reliever Dalier Hinojosa.

Kelly was roughed up in 2 2/3 innings of work, allowing three runs on seven hits.

The 26-year-old missed a big chunk of the 2014 season after suffering a hamstring injury in April. That injury kept him out nearly three months.

If Kelly has to miss an extended period of time with this injury, knuckleballer Steven Wright could be the next man up in the Red Sox rotation. Other options might include Matt Barnes, Henry Owens or Eduardo Rodriguez.
