Yoan Moncada Ranked Red Sox’s Top Prospect, No. 9 Overall By MLB.com

Yoan Moncada officially is the Boston Red Sox’s top prospect, according to MLB.com.

MLB.com updated its 2015 prospect rankings after Moncada’s minor league contract with the Red Sox was made official Thursday. Moncada now is the league’s No. 9 prospect overall.

Moncada, who was introduced by the Red Sox at a press conference Friday at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla., leapfrogged catcher Blake Swihart to become the organization’s top prospect. Swihart is the league’s No. 19 prospect overall, according to MLB.com.

Moncada ranks one spot ahead of Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo on MLB.com’s updated list. The eight prospects ranked ahead of Moncada include: Byron Buxton (OF, Minnesota Twins), Kris Bryant (3B, Chicago Cubs), Carlos Correa (SS, Houston Astros), Francisco Lindor (SS, Cleveland Indians), Addison Russell (SS, Cubs), Lucas Giolito (RHP, Washington Nationals), Corey Seager (SS, Los Angeles Dodgers) and Julio Urias (LHP, Dodgers).

The Red Sox invested $63 million to sign Moncada — a $31.5 million signing bonus plus a 100 percent tax to Major League Baseball — so they clearly have high expectations for the 19-year-old Cuban infielder. The good news for Boston is that Moncada’s future definitely looks bright.
