With head coach Brad Stevens garnering attention for the Boston Celtics’ recent success, it’s only natural his assistants would start getting noticed, too.
Jay Larranaga, Stevens’ top assistant on the Celtics bench, is one of the focuses of George Mason’s search for a new men’s basketball coach, Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports, citing sources. Larranaga, 39, is the son of Jim Larranaga, who led the Patriots on a Cinderella run to the Final Four in 2006.
Highly respected within the Celtics locker room, Larranaga has been credited by several players for his work behind the scenes. It is not known whether Larranaga is interested in a move to the college ranks, despite his father’s success at George Mason and Miami.
Larranaga interviewed for the Celtics’ and the Philadelphia 76ers’ head coaching jobs, which ultimately went to Stevens and Brett Brown, respectively. He was the lone holdover in Boston from Doc Rivers’ staff after Rivers departed for Los Angeles in 2013.
