Report: Devin McCourty ‘Top Priority’ For Eagles; Patriots Still Want Him

Bill Belichick might be competing with one of his buddies to sign Devin McCourty.

The All-Pro safety is a “top priority” in free agency for Chip Kelly’s Philadelphia Eagles, a league source told Yahoo! Sports’ Charles Robinson. Robinson also notes the Patriots would like to retain their defensive captain.

McCourty is by far the best safety available on the open market. The Patriots chose to franchise kicker Stephen Gostkowski over McCourty last week, and that decision could draw the ire from New England fans if the team can’t re-sign the safety.

The Patriots are over the salary cap and need to get under their $144 million figure by Tuesday. The Patriots also must figure out how to retain cornerback Darrelle Revis, who would pick New England over any other team if he receives comparable offers on the open market, sources told the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta.
