The New England Patriots actually could upgrade their third-down running back role after allowing Shane Vereen to walk in free agency.

The Patriots have “inquired about” former Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday. Spiller carried the ball 78 times for 300 yards in an injury-shortened 2014 season, and also had 19 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. Spiller was placed on injured reserve after nine games with a collarbone injury.

Spiller’s best season came in 2012, when he had 1,244 yards and six touchdowns on the ground and 43 catches for 459 yards with two scores.
