The New England Patriots could be on the hunt for a third-down running back in free agency.

Shane Vereen, who has held that role in the Patriots’ offense for the last three years, is drawing interest from the New York Giants and New York Jets, Comcast Sportsnet’s Mike Giardi reported Monday night.

Vereen could replace Bilal Powell and Chris Johnson with the Jets to combine with starter Chris Ivory. With the Giants, Vereen would join Andre Williams and Rashad Jennings in a running back-by-committee.

The Patriots have shown interest in free-agent running back Roy Helu, MassLive.com’s Kevin Duffy reported Monday. Helu previously served as the Washington Redskins’ third-down back.
