Russell Wilson’s Best Move Might Be To Hold Out For New Contract

Ideally, it’s not a great sign if your quarterback holds out, but Russell Wilson is a different case.

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback has been one of the biggest bargains in the NFL since breaking on to the scene in 2012. Wilson’s production — while still on his rookie contract — has been matched by just a few quarterbacks, and it could be argued that no one has put their team in a better position to win each season.

However, Wilson is reaching an impasse. NFL Media reported Monday that the Seahawks are unlikely to give Wilson big guaranteed money, but the plan is to get a deal done before training camp. Former NFL linebacker Matt Chatham sees no sense in Wilson waiting and believes the quarterback might be best suited by holding out.

“Taking a hardline stance for your professional well-being may seem selfish, especially to someone who has such a selfless persona,” Chatham wrote on FootballByFootball.com. “But considering all the contractual selflessness Wilson has played under for his team, the issue now isn’t selfishness, it’s degrees of stupidity to continue harboring all the risk in deference to your team’s preferred timeline.”
