The cold and the wind didn’t stop some of the world’s top runners Monday in the 119th running of the Boston Marathon.

Caroline Rotich of Kenya claimed the women’s title with a time of 2:24:55. It was an exciting finish in the elite women’s division, as Rotich sprinted past Ethiopia’s Mare Dibaba down the final stretch of Boylston Street to earn her first victory in Boston. Rotich finished fourth in 2011.

Shalane Flanagan of Marblehead, Mass., finished ninth in 2:27:47.

Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia, meanwhile, won the men’s division in 2:09:17, marking his second victory in the event. Desisa, who won in 2013, gifted his medal back to the city of Boston as a tribute to those affected by the bombings.

Meb Keflezighi, the 2014 champion, finished eighth in 2:12:42.
