The penalty phase of convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s trial will start Tuesday, April 21 — the day after this year’s race — the U.S. District Attorney’s Office said Friday.
The announcement came two days after a jury found Tsarnaev guilty on all 30 counts, following two days and over 11 hours of deliberation in U.S. federal court in Boston. Seventeen of those charges carried the possibility of the death penalty for his role in the 2013 bombing.
Tsarnaev, 21, was found guilty of the deaths of Martin Richard, Krystle Campbell and Lingzi Lu, who died in the blasts, as well as the death of MIT police officer Sean Collier, who was shot by Tsarnaev and older brother Tamerlan while on duty on the Cambridge, Mass., school’s campus.
