Bruce Jenner, who won a gold medal in the 1976 Olympic men’s decathlon, revealed to ABC News’ Diane Sawyer that he is in fact a transgender woman.

“For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman,” Jenner said in an interview that aired Friday night. “People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life, it is part of me. That female side is part of me. That’s who I am.”

Jenner, 65, told Sawyer that he took estrogen in the late 1980s and has been on hormones for more than a year, according to ABCNews.com. Jenner also has undergone cosmetic surgery to his face.

Jenner rose to fame as a star athlete in the 1970s and three decades later as a star of the reality TV show “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.” He set a world record with 8,616 points in the men’s decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

“A confused person at that time,” Jenner told Sawyer, via The Huffington Post. “Running away from my life. Running away from who I was.”

Jenner’s transition will be part of an E! documentary series set to debut July 26. It will feature eight one-hour episodes.
