The reach of Red Sox Nation extends far beyond Boston’s city limits. And when we say far, we mean almost-5,000-miles far.

Facebook on Wednesday revealed its annual MLB fandom map, which color-codes each U.S. county based on which team’s official Facebook page generates the most likes from people who live in that region.

As expected, most fan bases match up geographically, but the Red Sox’s tendrils extend far beyond New England into Utah, Idaho and even Alaska (click here for a larger photo).

Unfortunately for Boston fans, though, Red Sox Nation still doesn’t match the New York Yankees’ reach. According to Facebook, the Yankees are the most-liked team in the country overall, taking home at least one county in 24 states (compared to the Red Sox’s 14).

On the bright side, at least the Red Sox aren’t the New York Mets or Oakland Athletics, who thanks to the Yankees and San Francisco Giants didn’t garner a majority in a single U.S. county. The Toronto Blue Jays didn’t either, but they’ve pretty much got Canada on lockdown.

The full map is worth a look, as it also documents the expansion of the Giants’ and Kansas City Royals’ fan bases after their run to the World Series last season.
