Isaiah Thomas already knows exactly where he’ll be the night of May 2.
Unless his Boston Celtics have a playoff game that exact night, the point guard will be in Las Vegas supporting his good friend, Floyd Mayweather, as Mayweather steps into the ring against Manny Pacquiao in the most highly anticipated boxing match in years.
“If I can make it, I’m there,” Thomas told the Boston Herald. “If there’s something that week, we’re in the playoffs and we have a day off, then I’m going. I’ve gotta be at that fight and show my support.”
The 38-year-old boxer and the 26-year-old basketballer first met five years ago when Thomas attended one of Mayweather’s Vegas workouts, and they became fast friends. Mayweather has sat courtside for several of Thomas’ games and earlier this year bought the Celtics guard one heck of a birthday present: a $200,500 Bentley Flying Spur sedan that Thomas says he’ll be bringing to Boston next season.
“He’s given me a few gifts before, nice ones, but that one was unbelievable. It had everyone in the NBA talking,” Thomas told the Herald. “Every team we played after that, guys would come up to me (and ask), ‘Where’s the Bentley, does Floyd got something good for me?’ It surprised everybody.”
As for the upcoming fight, it’ll be the cherry on top of one of the greatest sports Saturdays of all time. Preceding Mayweather-Pacquiao — which won’t begin until the wee hours of the night — will be the Kentucky Derby, the final day of the NFL draft, a Red Sox-Yankees matchup and potentially several NHL and NBA playoff games.
