Joe Kelly is on the right track.
The Boston Red Sox pitcher came out firing in his first start of the 2015 season, allowing just one hit and one run on 93 pitches through seven innings in an 8-4 win over the New York Yankees last Saturday.
Kelly’s outing was a pleasant surprise for the Red Sox, who had tempered expectations for the 26-year-old after he battled a biceps injury in spring training. Yet Kelly appeared to show no ill effects, and he’s hoping to improve his durability even more in his second start, which will come Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.
“I was still trying to build up my pitch count and innings,” Kelly said after Saturday’s win, “and hopefully from here on out I can try to get to that 100-pitch mark.”
