NEW YORK — The ninth inning could belong to Koji Uehara on Opening Day at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox have not ruled out Uehara potentially returning for Monday’s home opener in Boston, manager John Farrell said before Friday’s game against the Yankees in New York.
Uehara, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, is scheduled to pitch out of the bullpen Saturday for Single-A Greenville, after which the Red Sox will reevaluate the 40-year-old closer.
Boston enters Friday’s game without having a save opportunity yet in 2015. The Red Sox blew out the Phillies on Opening Day in Philadelphia, dropped the teams’ middle game and then won 6-2 in the series finale.
Uehara suffered the hamstring strain while doing cardio work in spring training. Edward Mujica is viewed as the Red Sox’s primary closer in his absence, which doesn’t look like will continue much longer.
