It looks as though the Boston Red Sox won’t have to wait much longer for their closer to return.

The club expects Koji Uehara to be activated from the 15-day disabled list before Monday’s home opener against the Washington Nationals, manager John Farrell told reporters Sunday. Uehara has been rehabbing from a hamstring strain he suffered March 17.

The 40-year-old reliever pitched one inning for the Single-A Greenville Drive on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout. But Farrell said the team was encouraged by the outing.

“He came through yesterday’s outing fine,” Farrell said, per the Boston Herald. “He feels, I think, an increase in confidence after a full game of intensity.”

The Red Sox likely will send either Robbie Ross Jr. or Tommy Layne to Triple-A Pawtucket, as the southpaws are the only relievers with options.
