The good news for the Mat Latos and Brett Lawrie is that there’s still a lot of baseball left to play in the 2015 season.
The baseball season is just a few days old, but the Miami Marlins pitcher and Oakland Athletics third baseman already are in the running for what will be the ugliest performances of the entire year.
First, we start with Latos. The right-handed pitcher made his first start with the Miami Marlins after being traded from the Cincinnati Reds during the offseason. Latos got the ball against the Atlanta Braves and got lit up like a pinball machine. Latos couldn’t even make it out of the first inning, as Atlanta tagged him for seven runs on six hits with a pair of walks mixed in for good measure. After the disastrous start, Latos’ ERA now sits at a cool 94.50.
The Marlins went on to lose 12-2 to open the season with two losses — but at least there weren’t any roof issues Tuesday.
The other early-season candidate for worst performance of the season is Lawrie. The A’s third baseman had a rough go of it against the Texas Rangers. Lawrie went to the plate four times and came away with a strikeout each time. Not only did Lawrie take the golden sombrero, he did so in the most efficient way possible. Lawrie’s four strikeouts came on 12 pitches — three pitches in each punchout.
It can only go up from here, boys.
