Just two days ahead of the NFL draft, police are looking to question projected first-round pick La’el Collins in the shooting death of a pregnant Louisiana woman.
Baton Rouge, La., police told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday that Collins is not a suspect in the murder of 29-year-old Brittany Mills, but they believe he can assist in the investigation. Mills is believed to be a former girlfriend of the LSU offensive lineman.
Collins’ attorney, Jim Boren, told Schefter that he’s been in contact with the lead detective on the case, as well as the district attorney and a private investigative firm to help prove that Collins was not near Mills’ home at the time of her murder. Collins currently is in Chicago preparing for the draft.
“We took the investigation seriously,” Boren said from his office Tuesday. “We’ve tried to rule him out as a suspect. We’re going to provide that information to the police, and ultimately (Collins) will sit down and talk to them. But the timing is poor.”
According to police, Mills was shot and killed in her apartment Friday night after refusing to allow someone to borrow her car. The unborn child survived and is in stable condition, per The Advocate, but it’s unknown if Collins could be the infant’s father.
