Providence men’s hockey’s improbable run to its first-ever NCAA championship will go down in history, even among the highest ranks of national government.
The United States Senate made sure of that Friday, unanimously approving a resolution honoring the Friars for their historic title performance, which was capped by a 4-3 win over favored Boston University in the Frozen Four finals at TD Garden.
Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, the two Rhode Island Senators who introduced the resolution, congratulated their hometown team in statements Friday.
“These student athletes made the entire state proud,” Reed said. “I am pleased the U.S. Senate is honoring them with this resolution. I congratulate all of the Friars players, coaches, and staff whose season-long commitment, hard work, and dedication made this historic season possible.”
“The Friars earned this victory, and Rhode Islanders couldn’t be more proud of them,” Whitehouse added in his statement.
Reed also extended his best wishes to Providence’s Drew Brown, who missed the entire season after being diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.
