Niklas Kronwall has toed the line with big hits for his entire career, but he might have gone over that line Monday night.

The Detroit Red Wings defenseman has earned a reputation as one of the NHL’s biggest hitters with some of his checks being seen as sneaky dirty. The NHL Department of Player Safety announced Tuesday that Kronwall will have a hearing for what the league deemed “charging” and “an illegal check to the head” in Game 6 versus the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Kronwall destroyed Tampa Bay forward Nikita Kucherov with a vicious hit late in the second period Monday night. Kucherov wasn’t hurt and no penalty was called on the play, but apparently there’s enough there for the NHL to review the play.
