New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo reportedly has agreed to stick around on a restructured contract.
Mayo, who was due a cap hit over $10 million in 2015, agreed to a one-year contract with $4.5 million guaranteed, a source told NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. The contract also includes two option years, according to Rapoport.
Mayo, a defensive captain for the Patriots, has played just 12 games over the last two seasons after suffering pectoral and knee injuries. He is expected to start alongside Dont’a Hightower and Jamie Collins in 2015, though the Patriots also have shown interest in acquiring another starting-caliber linebacker. Hightower is coming off a torn labrum that could limit him in training camp and preseason.
Mayo originally was drafted No. 10 overall out of Tennessee in the 2008 NFL draft. He has 756 career tackles, 10 sacks and eight forced fumbles with the Patriots. He previously was signed through 2017.
