First, an injury. Then, a demotion. Now, another injury.
It’s been a rollercoaster start to 2015 for Boston Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo. The 27-year-old, who dealt with an oblique injury early in spring training, was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket at the end of camp. He’s now battling a shoulder injury after landing awkwardly while diving for a ball Saturday.
Castillo was removed from Saturday’s game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters Sunday in New York before his club’s game against the Yankees that Castillo likely will be examined in Boston at some point this week.
Castillo, who wasn’t in Pawtucket’s starting lineup Monday, got off to a hot start in the minors. The Cuban outfielder went 5-for-12 with two RBIs in his first three games.
Castillo signed seven-year, $72.5 million contract with Boston last August and figures to be a big part of the Red Sox’s future despite his demotion at the end of spring training.
