New England is home to some of the best schools and universities in the country, as well as many famed authors and poets.
Apparently those roots haven’t exactly rubbed off on Patriots fans.
The Wall Street Journal recently released an interesting study examining the grammar mistakes made by NFL fans. Using an automated proofreading company called Grammarly, it reviewed 150 reader comments of at least 50 words in length on the news section of each NFL team’s official website. It then calculated the number of mistakes per 100 words in those comments and displayed the results in a tidy graph.

Sorry, Pats fans, but a grammar mistake on one in almost 12 words is pretty rough. Then again, at least they’re not Washington Redskins fans, who blew out the competition by committing 16.5 grammar errors per 100 words.
Of course, there are a million caveats to this study. A sample size of 150 comments isn’t exactly huge, especially if it’s only on one team’s website, and just because a fan comments on a story doesn’t mean he or she supports that team.
If you’re a Detroit Lions or Green Bay Packers fan, though, we’re sure you don’t mind overlooking those clarifications.
But before those fan bases start to gloat, it appears all NFL fans aren’t really winners in the spelling department. Grammarly’s league-wide study found NFL fans average 9.9 mistakes per 100 words, easily worse than MLB and NHL fans (8.2 mistakes per 100 words) but better than NBA fans (10.3).
We’re guessing NFL draft prospect Owamagbe Odighizuwa might pose some problems.
