The Boston Red Sox’s lineup will be missing Xander Bogaerts’ name when they take on the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
The shortstop has been red-hot to start the 2015 season, going 2-for-3 with two runs, a walk and an RBI in Monday’s win over the Nationals to raise his average on the year to .433. But he won’t be on the diamond for the middle game of the series after suffering an injury yesterday.
Bogaerts is undergoing an MRI on his right knee after injuring it while rounding third base, manager John Farrell told reporters before the game. Bogaerts didn’t feel soreness in his knee until this morning, which led to the team sending him for additional testing. Brock Holt will take over at shortstop for the injured Bogaerts and bat eighth.
In other lineup news, Daniel Nava will get the start in right field while Ryan Hanigan will take over behind the plate.
Justin Masterson, meanwhile, will make his second start, searching for his second win of the season. The right-hander allowed two runs and three hits in six innings while striking out seven in his first start for Boston since 2009.
